Attendance Machine Not Reading Fingerprints? Troubleshooting Guide

A fingerprint attendance device that suddenly starts rejecting scans is almost never a sign the whole unit needs replacing — in the large majority of cases it’s one of a handful of common, fixable causes, and a few simple checks can often solve it before you need to book a service call.

Start with the sensor surface itself

The single most common cause of degraded fingerprint reading is a dirty or worn sensor pad. Every scan leaves behind a trace of oil, dust, or residue, and over weeks and months of daily use across dozens of employees, this builds up into a film that interferes with reading accuracy — often gradually enough that nobody notices until it crosses a tipping point where several people start failing to scan in the same week. This is a stronger indicator of a device-level or configuration issue than an individual fingertip problem, and it’s the kind of thing worth flagging to whoever installed or maintains the system rather than attempting to fix through the device’s own menu without guidance, since incorrect settings changes can sometimes make matching accuracy worse.

Before assuming the device has failed, it’s worth working through these in sequence: clean the sensor surface properly; ask the affected employee to try a different registered finger if more than one was enrolled; check whether the issue affects one person or many, since that alone tells you whether to look at the person or the device; and if none of that resolves it, check whether the device firmware is current. Each of these takes only a few minutes and rules out the most common causes before anything more involved is needed.
